1. I think the relationship in this painting is a married couple. The wife looks depressed about how their turned out. She is wearing an apron and it looks like she has to take care of the house. Her eyes make her look upset at her husband. The husband looks older and also looks upset. He's holding a pitchfork and works on a farm. They don't look happy together.

2. In this painting the couple looks like a typical American couple in the 19th century. It maybe is called "American Gothic" because it's showing the culture at the time and the style of the house. Yes, I agree with this painting because during the time it was created America was farm-oriented. It shows what America was about.
